Historic Hopland
Milano Family Winery

If you’re headed to Hopland and looking to add a little history to your trip, don’t forget to stop by Milano Family Winery and explore a winery with deep historical roots and a fantastic story. The Milano Family Winery is located in Mendocino County and was the first of its kind to the beautiful area of Hopland, California.

This story starts with Vincenzo (Jimmy) Milone who immigrated from Italy to Hopland, and fell in love with the daughter of the winery’s owner Achilles Rosetti. Rosetti was the operator of the first winery in Hopland, until prohibition. Along with Rosetti’s son Frank, Milone farmed pears, prunes, grapes, and the ever so booming hops. Frank and Jimmy built a hop kiln and dried hops until 1954, a kiln that you can still see today, and is worth the visit, as it is the only one open to the public. With hops on the decline they turned their attention to grapes and so the Milano Family Winery was born.

The hop kiln was erected in the 1940’s to replace the original hop kiln that burned down in the 1930’s due to a bootlegger’s still. The hop kiln was used to dry and bale the hops before shipping them worldwide for beer brewing. Milano offers tours of this beautiful historic structure, just make sure you make an appointment. You can see how hops were originally processed, and of course, the current winemaking activities. The drying building of the hop kiln now houses their tank room filled with sleek stainless steel tanks used for fermentation and storage. The hop kiln’s original storage room is now the warm and rustic tasting room and one floor below is the barrel room where the wines age in French oak barrels.

Today all the wines are made on site in that very same hop kiln by winemaker Deanna Starr. Ted and Deanna Starr acquired the Milano Family winery in 2001.

Deanna, a nurse turned winemaker, along with her husband Ted, both grew up in Southern California. He started a software company specializing in medical research database. They met at the health facility in San Diego where Deanna was nursing director and he had become the IT director. They soon discovered they both loved animals and wine.

They married in 1993 and opened a pet store. He still has six giant tortoises you can see at the winery, along with a gaggle of geese, a llama, a pygmy goat, a sheep, and their charming dog Zeus.

Ted and Deanna made frequent wine tasting trips in Northern California, building up their private wine collection and exploring the world of wine. It was Hopland who found the Starrs when a winemaker from Sebastopol heard Milano was for sale and sent them a video he made of it. They headed north to see for themselves and purchased the seven acre parcel with the hop kiln from the Milone family.

As soon as they moved in Ted went to work redesigning the winery space so Deanna could make wine  herself. “There’s a parallel between nursing and winemaking,” she says. “A nurse assesses a patient’s symptoms just like a  winemaker assesses grapes. You create a treatment plan and watch for problems along the way, and like a patient each grape varietal has its own needs”.

She carefully crafts a variety of wines, each tended with love and care. Varietals of Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, plus some of the more unique varietals such as Carignane, Charbono, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Valdiguie, compose the portfolio. Deanna loves to make wine blends, with cheeky names like Big Ass Red, Big Ass Blonde, and Sunshine. Late-harvest Zinfandel and Ports are also a specialty. Fresh fruit, bold flavors, and intoxicating aromas are just a few things that add to the mystique of her wines.

Tasting room guests get to explore them all within the walls of the kiln, and enjoy the marvels of today’s winemaking. Be sure to ask for a tour of this beautiful historic structure (by appointment only) that was transformed into the modern day winemaking facility that is Milano Family Winery.

Uncork the Organic at Frey Vineyards

Organic is the new black. It has created a food revolution from grocery stores to cooking shows. Everywhere you go there is new information about the benefits of going organic. It is a worldwide trend in all things food related, but at Frey Vineyards, they didn’t have to wait for it to become popular, organic was the only way to go. Frey has been on the forefront of organic practices since the 1960’s. Paul and Beba Frey along with their children, started planting Cabernet Sauvignon and Gray Riesling, and sold the fruit to nearby wineries. A decade later brothers Jonathan and Matthew realized their mission when a Cabernet Sauvignon made from Frey’s grapes won a gold medal for a Santa Cruz winery. Frey Vineyards came to life in 1980 and became the first organic winery in the U.S.

Jonathan introduced high integrity organic practices that are still in place today, and his brother Matthew learned the mechanical and technical skills of the wine business. They decided their wine would be made not only from organically grown grapes, but without any added sulfites. In the late 1980’s, Paul Frey Jr. returned from school to help perfect the techniques for making wine without the sulfite preservative, and is today their main winemaker. In 1996, Luke Frey spearheaded the conversion of their estate vineyards to biodynamic cultivation, making Frey Vineyards the first producer of certified Demeter Biodynamic wines in North America.

What does certified Demeter Biodynamic wine mean?

1.All organic certification guidelines must be met.

2.Farm management encourages biodiversity on multiple levels (i.e. soil microbiological life, cropping systems, wildlife, livestock).

3.Pest control focuses on solutions based on living internal dynamics of the farm, rather than importing inputs from outside sources.

4.Practice conservation of on-farm resources including water, soil, genetic diversity, human resources.

5.Use of all the Biodynamic field sprays and compost preparations on a consistent and annual basis.

6.Fertility system focuses on closing nutrient cycles so that fertility is generated from life on the farm rather than being imported. (These guys are serious!!)

They are true stewards of the earth, and are healers through agriculture. Frey Vineyards is dedicated to growing the highest quality wine grapes and producing the finest organic wines you can find. They must be doing something right, as Frey Vineyards increases their following, and continues taking GOLD in competitions.

Frey Organic and Biodynamic wines are 100% Organic with No Sulfites Added.  All of the Gold Medal winners listed below are available to taste in the Tasting Bar located inside Real Goods, at the Solar Living Center, in beautiful Hopland, California.

Wine & Music:
Nelson Family Vineyards

“the key to making world class wines is to start with world class grapes”. -Greg Nelson

For over 50 years the Nelson family has been farming vineyards and attracting people every year to the beautiful region of Hopland. It is truly a family affair as each generation has put in their time and energy, infusing this ranch with their own flair.  Nelson Family Vineyards has been home to patriarch Greg Nelson since he was 5 years old, and together with his sons Tyler and Chris have molded it to what it is today. Chris is the winemaker, and Tyler is the farmer and coordinator for special projects such as getting part of the ranch organically certified, and Fish Friendly Farming practices. Missy Nelson, Matriarch of the Nelson clan is a gardening instructor for St. Mary’s School, and annually plants one acre of corn and pumpkin patch for the children of Ukiah to visit during the autumn season.

Known for growing excellent grapes since the 1970’s, Greg, Tyler and Chris were inspired by the idea of what their grapes and a little imagination could do for them. It all started with a Pinot Grigio and since then expanded to, Riesling, Viognier, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Muscat.

A specialty of theirs is their Barn Blend, which is made by a competition of aspiring winemakers coming together and creating a blend. The winning team gets bragging rights as their blend is created for the next release of Nelson Family Vineyards Barn Blend.

Not only are you in for a great glass of wine, but Nelson Family Vineyards is an excellent escape on those warm summer nights with their Summer Concert Series. It is held in the majestic redwood grove overlooking the cabernet vineyard. Monthly events provide outdoor music entertainment featuring bands playing blues, country, rock and roll and jazz. This year they have Ukiah’s own Funky Dozen, the Rolling Stones Unauthorized, Petty Theft, and Kingsborough. Bring the family, blankets and chairs and enjoy a fantastic night with music and stars.

Whether you are visiting for the day, enjoying some wine, or taking in some summer tunes, Nelson Family Vineyards is a place you don’t want to miss.

Visit Nelson Family Vineyards tasting room, at 550 Nelson Ranch Rd, off Highway 101, down the road behind the strawberries. Open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Going for Gold

Milano Winery Gold Medal at 2015 Orange County Wine Society Wine Competition for our 2009 Bartolomei Carignane.  The beauty of the OCWS competition is that all of the judges are winemakers or winery principals – not wine writers, sommeliers, wine shop buyers – it is your peers!
McFadden Farm The 2015 New York International Wine Competition named McFadden Farm the “North Coast Winery of the Year,” and the NV McFadden Sparkling Cuvee Brut continues an unprecedented run of gold medals with a new Gold Medal at the 2015 International Craft Wine Awards and both another Gold Medal and Best of Class honor at the 2015 Orange County Wine Competition.

Terra Savia‘s first non-sparkling Rosé and a double gold winner at the San Francisco International Wine Competition! This delightful Rosé of Merlot is refreshingly easy on the palate is ridiculous. It sports a perfect balance of mouth-watering acidity, rounded, ripe red fruit, and a tad bit of river rock mineral as is common with this type of wine. Pair with a backyard pool, a day in the park, or light dishes such as hard cheeses, caesar salad, or halibut, not that it really needs to be paired with anything…

Sip! Mendocino

Thirsty Thursdays

July 23, 2015 • 06:00 PM – 08:00 PM

A sip of summer in a glass! Join us for a special tasting of Mendocino’s finest roses. While a symbol of summer sipping, the diversity of styles makes rosé a great partner for the table.

About Rose & Food
These wines are versatile because they fall in between the extremes of red and white — less intense than a big, tannic, mouth-busting red, but with more depth than a super-light white. That happy-medium flavor profile means you can almost always find one that plays nice with what you’re eating — fish, veggies, chicken, grilled steak, potato chips, chocolate chip cookies, you name it. It’s the perfect barbecue wine, the perfect beach wine, and the perfect picnic wine, but it’s also the perfect sitting-around-with-friends wine.

Rudy Colombini & The Unauthorized Rolling Stones:

The World’s Greatest Tribute to The World’s Greatest Rock N Roll Band!

For over a decade, Rudy Colombini & The Unauthorized Rolling Stones has been recognized as the premier Rolling Stones tribute band in the world. In 2014, founder and frontman Rudy Colombini expanded the band by adding all-star members from some of the world’s biggest acts, plus keyboards, sax, and a dynamite team of backup singers. The result was a quantum leap that has left other Stones tributes in the dust.

Insiders and die hard fans alike call Rudy & The Unauthorized, “better than the real thing.” David Patrick, Spectator Magazine photographer for The Rolling Stone’s First Twenty Years said it best: “They sounded more like the Rolling Stones than the Rolling Stones do. In fact, The Unauthorized Rolling Stones sang many of Stones’ songs better than the Stones!”

Grape Expectations: Campovida

Hopland, although a small community, is filled with 16 wonderful local wineries, today we want to spotlight Campovida who is celebrating their 5th year anniversary.Throughout the years the land we know now as Campovida has passed from family to family. It was once home to the Pomo Indians, a cattle rancher, a railroad and timber baron, a hop broker, a lumbar executive and lastly host to winemaker Bernard Fetzer. But that's all history…who we want to talk about are a lovely couple named Anna and Gary who in 2010 fell in love with the property and are now the current stewards of this land.

Originally living in Oakland the couple wanted to find their forever home, needing a bit more outdoor space than what they could get in the city. Little did they know that the future spot of their new dream home would become a full time business, and gathering place for people from all walks of life.  They worked hard to restore many areas of the property left behind from previous owners, and ended up with a successful winery, a beautiful prized garden, and enough space to hold conferences and food and wine events which keeps them very busy.

"we knew that we wanted to bring something back that had been forgotten and help breath life back into hopland" – Anna Beuselinck

Campovida attracts people interested in retreats and lectures, wine enthusiasts, and food related business to the beautiful region of Hopland. So get in your car, and come visit Campovida in Hopland CA, make some new friends, and drink some wine. It's a great family run business and we can't wait to see what else the Campovida family will dream of next. Congratulations on your 5th anniversary!
